Destination Weddings

  • Strict etiquette dictates that the couple is responsible for covering the cost of lodging and for picking up the tab for food and beverages at the wedding for all guests.
  • Even if you aren't going to cover the lodging costs, you should still find lodging options and make recommendations to your guest. Look for group rates and offer more than one option. Consider all budget ranges.
  • Guests pay their own airfare.
  • Send "Save the Date" cards at least a year in advance to allow all guests time to make travel plans. Put information about lodging and transportation on or in with the Save the Date so people can plan ahead of time. Setting up a wedding website is a good way to keep guests informed of plans and options for a destination wedding.
  • Only send invitations to those people who you really want to attend.
  • Meet guests as they arrive. If the bride or groom can't meet each person, ask the Best Man or Maid/Matron of Honor to help with arriving guests.
  • Consider having a reception back at home after the wedding so those who couldn't travel or others can be included and participate.
  • Be sure to inform your guests of attire requirements for the destination you have picked. Let them know what type of clothing best suits the location and give the dress code for the wedding.
